In Edwards’ rough-and-tumble telling, the world-building feels fresh and lively.

One of the most creative, daring, and visionary original sci-fi films we’ve had in YEARS. It’s got Gorgeous visuals, stunning world-building, spectacular imagination, and timely commentary.

[...] perhaps his most challenging yet, incorporating religion, philosophy, and ethics into a sci-fi drama that effectively recreates the horrors of wars past via gorgeously-rendered futuristic trappings.
-
8 / 10
"The Creator" reverberates with that sort of doomy relish: it’s been too long since a good time at the cinema felt this serious, let alone vice versa.
-
8 / 10
There are also plenty of narrative shortcuts to arrive at an otherwise stirring third act - though all this admittedly doesn’t matter to an audience with tears in their eyes for a robot child without a soul.

7.5 / 10
[...] while the world is a little more interesting than the story it tells, it’s still a decent yarn that imagines a world where AI can learn and grow and not just steal journalists’ jobs and require help to recognise fire hydrants.

7 / 10
Equally brilliant as it is flawed, "The Creator" is entrenched in a deep, rich world that Edwards has structured to a certain point.
-
7 / 10
"The Creator" showcases Edwards at his best – strong photography, innovative design – but also shows off his ongoing weaknesses – simplistic characters, underwhelming scripts, and a tendency to leave the strongest story ideas off the table.
-
4 / 10
It’s a handsome film and demonstrates the filmmakers’ vivid imagination, but this doesn’t quite extend to the story itself, or its dialogue which often veers into cheesy territory.
-
2.5 / 10
If you take the movie seriously — and it wants to be taken seriously — "The Creator" is basically saying we should surrender to the robots, even ones that kill people, especially if they have good manners or take the shape of a little kid.

In many ways, "The Creator" is the perfect representation of our originality-starved movie landscape — a film so desperate to be original that it ends up recycling the concepts that better movies have done before, to less potent results.

It’s hard not to be impressed with the sci-fi spectacle of it all. The film itself though is a slog, overly grim and sloppily assembled, a whiff no matter how good it looks.

The ambition and scope earn well-deserved applause, yet there's an unfulfilling quality to the story and script that leaves you craving more.

The film is, as far as contemporary studio thinking goes, a gamble. And it pays off wonderfully.

Gareth Edwards’ Sci-Fi Fantasy Is Thrillingly Original Despite its Murky Take on AI

The movie pokes at ideas about what it means to be human without much conviction.

Translated from spanish: Blending the aesthetics of "District 9" and "Blade Runner 2049," with several references to the Vietnam War and films like "Apocalypse Now," resistance ends up feeling like a well-crafted pastiche, which has a lot to say about human nature, discrimination, and violent interventions by the United States in other countries.

Translated from swedish: It is difficult not to be enthused by Gareth Edwards' boyish charm as a director. "The Creator" is an incredibly ambitious and visually creative creation; it is a film that is rarely produced in a time when film companies seek security in established and popular brands.

Translated from swedish: Like much other science fiction, the movie seems to deal a lot with our time and our controversial issues. Mostly, it's excitement at a heart-pounding pace. More action than spirituality.

Translated from swedish: "The Creator" is a fresh breeze in Hollywood, but despite its interesting concept, it doesn't bring much new. It is well-made, nicely filmed, and at times emotional, but it doesn't go all the way.

Edwards pays homage to the greats that have inspired & influenced the genre but still adds his unique style, paired perfectly with Fraser/Soffer cinematography and Zimmer’s amazing Score. I consider this a MUST watch for fans of science fiction!
