Edwards is a wizard with his laptop's effects program. The squiddy things he conjures up look like the real deal — thoroughly creepy and a gazillion feet tall. Too bad his screenwriting software didn't have an equivalently impressive plot-twisting algorithm to get him to the final fade. If he'd been able to conjure up an ending as persuasive as his monsters, he'd be all set.

Translated from swedish: It's ambitious of Gareth Edwards to almost single-handedly create this unconventional alien film. But especially when it comes to the story, the number of plot holes, and how the characters are portrayed, he would have benefited greatly from involving others.

Translated from swedish: "Monsters" is, as mentioned, a slower, more melancholic and ethereal story than I believe most people would imagine based on the premise. It raises more questions than it delivers answers. Is it a truly great film, worthy of all the attention it has received as a low-budget thriller with ambitions beyond the ordinary? Or is it "merely" a good genre film with certain limitations due to its tighter financial constraints?

Translated from swedish: There's a good idea behind Monsters and there's creative joy, but there are also significant weak elements that are so weak that the rating will never reach high levels simply because the budget wasn't high.

Translated from swedish: "Monsters" barely passes as science fiction or any form of monster movie, and the disappointment follows accordingly when it's marketed as such. Even if I overlook the low budget, it doesn't help that the film is very boring throughout large portions and often lacks exciting scenes and engaging plots.

The instances of suspense and tension exist in service of the narrative, not the other way around. Edwards deserves credit not for having made a science fiction monster movie on a shoestring budget, but having made a good science fiction monster movie on a shoestring budget.
