Christopher Nolan’s three-hour historical biopic “Oppenheimer” is a gorgeously photographed, brilliantly acted, masterfully edited and thoroughly engrossing epic that instantly takes its place among the finest films of this decade

A biopic in constant free fall, "Oppenheimer" is Christopher Nolan’s most abstract yet most exacting work, with themes of guilt writ-large through apocalyptic IMAX nightmares that grow both more enormous and more intimate as time ticks on. A disturbing, mesmerizing vision of what humanity is capable of bringing upon itself, both through its innovation, and through its capacity to justify any atrocity.

"Oppenheimer" is a towering achievement not just for Nolan, but for everyone involved. It is the kind of film that makes you appreciative of every aspect of filmmaking, blowing you away with how it all comes together in such a fitting fashion. Even though Nolan is honing in on talents that have brought him to where he is today, this film takes this to a whole new level of which we've never seen him before. With Oppenheimer, Nolan is more mature as a filmmaker than ever before, and it feels like we may just now be beginning to see what incredible work he’s truly capable of making.

The storytelling in "Oppenheimer" is indeed just as masterful as it is powerful. It is an ominous and timely reminder of the double-edged nature of science, how close humanity actually is to wiping itself out, and how the world has changed - forever. - André Lamartine

Christopher Nolan's three-hour drama about the father of the atomic bomb, Robert Oppenheimer, is a surprisingly political documentary that evolves into one of the visionary director's best films. - Tue Sorensen

Nolan is smart in such a way that he reveals a lot of what goes through his mind, and just through Cillian's expression I can understand what he is going through and thinking. I can't imagine the burden the real Oppenheimer went through his entire life. - Linus Andersen

Oppenheimer is at times a magically terrifying experience, with its only real drawback being its three-hour length. Very few directors - if any - can make films as interesting as Christopher Nolan right now. - Fredrik Lagnetoft

  • 11. Roger Ebert
    8 / 10

The movie is an academic-psychedelic biography in the vein of those 1990s Oliver Stone films that were edited within an inch of their lives (at times it's as if the park bench scene in "JFK" had been expanded to three hours).

"Oppenheimer" is best seen in an IMAX theater. In addition to offering us expansive views of New Mexico, we also get to witness the first successful atomic bomb test, which is one of the highlights of the film. - Andreas Ziegler

Universal gave Nolan a budget of one hundred million dollars and full creative control over "Oppenheimer". A good decision. The result is one of Nolan's strongest, smartest and emotionally most profound films. - Oscar Westerholm

It is a film that reminds us of the existence of weapons of mass destruction and the threat of the destruction of our civilization - about humanity's ability to measure suffering without reflection. - Gabriel V. Rindborg

It’s a dialogue-heavy feature, which doesn’t always provide a gripping viewing experience, finding Nolan sometimes getting lost with dramatic showdowns, in need of more restraint when it comes to examining the fine details of motivations.

"Oppenheimer" feels a bit like a mini-series for TV - edited into a feature-length film. Three one-hour episodes. To be honest, I think the film would do just as well, maybe even better, in the smaller format.

This is a big, ballsy, serious-minded cinematic event of a type now virtually extinct from the studios. It fully embraces the contradictions of an intellectual giant who was also a deeply flawed man, his legacy complicated by his own ambivalence toward the breakthrough achievement that secured his place in the history books.
