Translated from swedish: Todd Haynes' "May/December" is a disturbing, yet also unexpectedly unsettling film about dysfunctional family relationships and abuse. On the surface, this is a comedic melodrama, but if you scratch beneath it, a creepy psychological thriller emerges.

Translated from swedish: Todd Haynes' "May/December" is a dark relationship drama about grooming, manipulative women, life lies and betrayal, where Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman and Charles Melton all excel in their roles.

Translated from swedish: When director Todd Haynes examines toxic femininity, loosely based on a scandalous story that shook America in the early '90s, he does so with powerful subtlety and two women whose rivalry and integrity crackle with tension.

Translated from swedish: "May/December" consistently parodies the typical aesthetics of American TV movies: dramatic scoring, overly obvious symbolism, and uninspired cinematography. Whatever intentions the filmmakers may have had in this case, how could the result be anything other than cheap and sensationalistic?

Translated from swedish: Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman are both outstanding in this film. The two of them and their interplay with each other is one of the reasons why the movie becomes so good and so intense.

Translated from swedish: The provocative meta-approach in "May/December" adds a more human dimension to the triangle drama. Haynes explores the unequal dynamics behind all the "mommy issues" with a biting dark humor that maintains the film's edge all the way to the end.

Translated from swedish: I really love how "May/December" turns expectations on their head and shows that there are different ways to commit an assault. And that if you're guilty of one, maybe that's what matters, rather than who you are and why you did it.

Translated from swedish: The film generously scatters red herrings throughout its runtime, keeping us constantly on edge. Perhaps this leads to the film's focus becoming rather muddled and messy in the end, all served up by a director who delights in our confusion.

Translated from swedish: The problem I had was that the film was way too vague about what it wanted to tell. We never get the full picture of the relationship between Julianne Moore and Charles Melton, other than that he was underage when they first met and fell in love. But then complications arose after that, which are never really answered and what kind of complications they were. I did like the ending though, which delivered a real punch and gave meaning to the entire film's message, and how the movie itself almost misled the viewer a bit.

Translated from swedish: Todd Haynes' new film follows the real case where a 35-year-old female teacher was sentenced to prison for a romantic relationship with her 13-year-old student in the USA. "May/December" is packed with lies, self-deception, and questions about consent.
